Sourced primarily from Indonesian plantations, our teak comes from trees that take 35 to 50 years to mature, ensuring the highest quality. These plantations, carefully managed by government bodies, thrive in the ideal sub-tropical climate of Java.

Teak, originally brought to Indonesia by Buddhist monks in the 16th century, has a rich history. Expanded by the Dutch for their East Indies spice routes, it is now one of the world’s most sought-after hardwoods. Valued for its strength and beauty, teak is used in high-end furniture, shipbuilding, and architectural details. Its high natural oil content makes it exceptionally weather-resistant and stable, making it the perfect choice for outdoor luxury furniture.

Caring for Your Teak Furniture

Teak’s natural oils mean that painting or varnishing isn’t required and may even cause peeling over time. Instead, here’s how you can care for your teak to keep it looking its best:

  • Preserving the Original Colour: Over time, teak naturally weathers to a beautiful silver-grey patina. If you’d prefer to maintain the rich, golden-brown hue of new teak, we recommend using a Teak Sealer. This won’t affect the wood’s durability or strength but does require regular re-application to ensure continuous protection.

  • Winter Storage: For winter storage, it's best to keep your teak furniture in a water-tight garden shed or garage. Be cautious when moving your furniture from outside into a heated indoor space, as sudden changes in temperature and humidity may cause the wood to split.

  • Maintaining Weathered Teak: If you prefer the classic silver-grey look of weathered teak, we suggest using our Teak Protector by Gloster. This invisible shield prevents staining from food and moisture, repels dirt, and inhibits mildew growth, helping to keep your furniture in pristine condition.
